Description:

The Eve of Celebration: Chand Raat in Old Dhaka The journey begins on the night before Eid, known locally as Chand Raat (Night of the Moon). As the new crescent moon is sighted, Old Dhaka transforms into a sprawling, open-air festival. We dive into the labyrinthine alleys of Shankhari Bazar and Chawkbazar. The air is thick with the scent of attar (perfume) and sizzling street delicacies like kebabs and shahi jalebi. You will see thousands of people rushing for last-minute gifts, while roadside stalls are packed with women getting intricate henna (mehendi) designs on their palms. For a photographer, this is the pinnacle of street life—neon lights reflecting off rickshaw bells and the sheer, unbridled kinetic energy of a city that refuses to sleep.

The Day of Grace: Devotion and the Pink Palace On the morning of Eid, the atmosphere shifts from chaotic to sublime. We visit the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque, where tens of thousands of men in pristine white panjabis gather for the Eid prayer, a powerful display of unity and faith. As the city settles into a festive lunch at home, we make our way to the Buriganga River to visit Ahsan Manzil, the iconic “Pink Palace.” Once the seat of the Nawabs of Dhaka, the palace grounds became a fashion runway on Eid day. Locals flock here in their finest silk saris and embroidered tunics, creating a stunning contrast against the rose-colored grand staircase. We conclude the afternoon with a traditional “Nawabi” lunch featuring Kachchi Biryani, the crown jewel of Dhakaiya cuisine.

The Echoes of Empire: The Lost City of Panam On the final day, we leave the urban sprawl for the tranquil outskirts of Sonargaon, the medieval capital of Bengal. Our primary destination is Panam City (Panam Nagar), a hauntingly beautiful “ghost city” consisting of a single street lined with 52 derelict mansions built by wealthy Hindu cloth merchants in the 19th century. The fusion of European and Mughal architecture, now draped in moss and vines, offers a melancholic yet majestic glimpse into the past. After wandering through the Zainul Abedin Folk Art Museum, where the heritage of Bengali craftsmanship is preserved, we head to the banks of the Meghna River. A sunset boat ride on a traditional wooden vessel provides a peaceful conclusion to the tour, watching the golden light dance over one of the world’s largest river systems.
